Day 9, 2020: David Logan Shelter to Sucker Brook

Miles: 13.2; Elevation gained: 2,100 ft; Mile reached: 130.7

Not much to report on the hiking end of things, except we ended the long stretch of, let’s call it, lots of walking and climbing with no views. Once you cross Brandon Gap, you are on Mt Horrid, which includes the Great Cliffs. I don’t know how the name came about, but there is nothing horrid about the place, especially in weather like this.

We camped at Sucker Brook Shelter, perhaps so named because the Brook was more like a trickle, Sucker. Another bit of falling for the old okey doke was what mice did to my pack. One of my hip pockets already had a hole chewed thru it when I left trail mix in it. This time there were just crumbs, and one bit of back packer wisdom says if you leave the pockets open, the mice will actually help by cleaning them out. Instead, the little shts ignored the open zipper on top and chewed thru the bottom anyway. I’ll be lucky if I have anything left to put on my back by the time we reach Canada.

And the al fresco privy! Love it! See pics!

More of the trail’s “micro” sights. The stuff at our feet for 8-9 hours a day

Getting pretty popular to skin up and ski down
Don’t think I’ve ever seen this. Top half of tree breaks off and lands perfectly upside down next to bottom half. Things that make you go “hmmm”

Once again the road’s high point meets the trail’s low point

On Mt Horrid’s Great Cliffs, including the two Chris’ audition for middle-aged men’s hiking clothes
Home sweet home at Sucker Brook. Note how Chris incorporated these tree into his tent architecture
The al fresco privy and the view from the business end. Relaxing actually!

  1. So many things I have never seen and never will. Thanks. Great to see your ankle in  a picture looking healthy!  Think you should send the hiking guys pic to whatever catalogue advertises such things. Or L.L.Bean
